It wasn't really a choice. I went straight for option 3.
'I never said that,' I said in a deep voice, hoping to sound authoritative and manly.
'You said you were a single dad!'
'Well, I am George's only dad!' I replied, but then caught Maria looking at me with disgust and added, 'I think you said that, actually.'
'But you didn't deny it!'
'You didn't give me a chance to!'
'I can't believe this! You made me think that...'
Serena burst into tears.
'Juice is ready,' said Ravi, entering the room with three glasses of yellow, frothing liquid on a tray. 'Serena Miss is crying?' he asked.
'Let me take those from you, Mr Wijeytunge,' said Perdita and she patted Ravi on the arm to indicate that it might be best if he left but Ravi stayed right where he was.
'Well, I must say,' said Maria, sipping at her juice and eying me like a lioness who knows it has entrapped its prey, 'I'm ever so glad I made the trip down here. I feel like I've learned such a lot!'
'Serena, don't be silly now,' Perdita comforted Serena in her own, cold fashion, handing her a thick serviette, 'blow your nose.'
'I don't want to blow my nose!' cried Serena, 'He lied to me! You all think I'm a fool!'
'I didn't lie!' I cried back, 'You believed what you wanted to believe.'
'You let me believe it!'
'No!' I countered. When really up against a wall it's good to stick to monosyllables. 'No. No. No.'
'Mr Sven Sir is in love with Saskia Ma'm,' said Ravi quietly, 'he would never do such a thing.' Ravi looked over at me shyly, his moustache twitching and added, 'They are like Romeo and Juliet.'
'Ha!' snorted Maria, 'I suppose that makes me Lady Capulet? That suits me fine. Mothers know what's best for their daughters. If Juliet had taken her mothers advice she would have never ended up dead.'
'No Ma'm,' Ravi argued from his corner of the room, 'it was because of the stars. It was for Juliet her auspicious time to die.'
'This is ridiculous!' cried Maria, standing up and throwing up her hands, 'I'm not going to get into an argument about Shakespeare with a driver!'
'Star-crossed lovers!' shouted Ravi.
'Why don't you just leave, Sven?' cried Serena and ran out of the kitchen. A few seconds later we heard a door slam.
'She'll get over it,' said Perdita primly, 'I hope she's not spoiled your designs, Sven.'
'You didn't get to see them,' I muttered to Maria.
'No, but I did get to find out why you've been so keen to run down here and shirk your duties at home! Because of that girl with hair like a toilet brush!'
'No, it's because I'm building a bloody orphanage, Maria!'
'Please, no blaspheming!' cried Perdita.
'I don't see you mixing cement or laying bricks,' sneered Maria, 'this whole set up is a farce, Sven, and I must say, it doesn't surprise me in the least. It's been three years since I first met you and in that time I've never known you complete an honest day's work!'
'That's not true!' I fought back but even as I did so in my mind I was flicking through the calendar pages to find an example of my industriousness to counter Maria's claim. I was struggling.
'This isn't true, that's not true... you sound like a big baby, Sven. I don't know how Saskia puts up with you. But she does and since she is married to you, I'm taking you home.'
'You're not taking me anywhere!'
'Don't think you can fight me, Sven, it's really not worth it. Besides, you've got a fashion show to supervise.'
'Fashion show?' said Perdita, who had been listening to Maria with a horrified expression on her face.
'Unless of course you're planning to run off with one of the models?' jeered Maria.
'I haven't run off with anybody!' I cried, 'If you'd even bothered to ask me I would have told you that...'
'But I didn't bother, did I, Sven?' said Maria.
'Jesus!' I swore, 'I'm sorry Perdita, but, Jesus!'
'I don't believe,' Perdita spoke cautiously to Maria, weighing her words, 'that Sven has done anything inappropriate with Serena. The children have been with them almost the whole time. And Sven has done a very good job Mrs...'
'You don't know my son-in-law,' replied Maria, 'the point is, nobody does. Thank you very much for the juice and I wish you all the best for your little project, and do send my regards to Lady Chigley, but now I must take Sven to his home. Which is not here.'
Ravi's moustache had drooped. I knew exactly what he was feeling; if Maria banned me from returning to the orphanage he wouldn't have the chance to see Perdita again. And he hadn't even had a chance to tell her yet that he too was an orphan.
'But we can't go now because Ravi has to stay,' I said quickly.
'Why?' snapped Maria.
'Because he's promised to teach the children.... reading.'
Ravi raised his head and looked at Perdita then me in confusion. Luckily Maria was packing her wet-ones and her lipstick back into her Louis Vitton handbag and didn't notice. 'Surely they're taught to read at school,' she said Maria, 'I don't see what they're going to learn from him.'
'Shakespeare,' said Perdita suddenly.
'That's right,' I jumped in, eager to hug Perdita for her inventiveness. She would have made a bloody good liar if she wasn't so straight.
'I am - teach-ing Shakespeare .... to the children?' Ravi asked.
'Listen to him! He doesn't have a clue what you're talking about!' opined Maria, 'I hardly see how he's going to act as an Emeritus Professor to these kids!'
'No,' I argued, 'that's just the way he talks. Very slow. That way the children can understand him.' I was on a roll. 'Recite May I compare thee to a summer's day, Ravi!'
Ravi coughed a little and began.
'May I comp-are. Thee to a Summ-er's Day.
Thou art more lovely and more temp-er-ate...'
'That'll do,' I said. Ravi stopped and I noticed that Perdita was looking down on him from her great height and that across her brown, leather face a smile was stretched, as taught as a piece of knicker elastic.
'I don't see how that's going to help these children get ahead in their lives,' scorned Maria.
'That's where you're wrong,' said a small, girlish voice, 'Shakespeare is going to save the world.'
The orphans must have returned from school for now, Meena, the oldest of the girls, was standing in the doorway, holding an exercise book in her hand, probably with a gold star to show to Perdita, whom I had seen on several occasions soften remarkably and praise the children exuberantly for commendations gained at school. Meena was regarding Maria with one of those looks of pure hatred that only children are brave enough to convey. I wondered what had provoked in Meena such instant dislike, then I realised that the answer was simple: Maria.
Maria did not stop to ask Meena her name, her age, or what the book was in her hand. She simply said,
'Sven, we're going.'
'Miss Serena always says,' continued Meena, simultaneously upping the intensity of her hate-filled regard, 'that Shakespeare was a very clever man, a bit like Jesus, only he made things a bit like television programmes, and that if everybody watched these television programmes that Mr Shakespeare has make, then no more fighting. Everybody very happy, no?'
'I think we tried teaching everybody Shakespeare once, didn't we Sven,' replied Maria tartly, 'it was called The British Empire. It didn't work.'
'I regret having been born after the fall of the British Empire,' said Perdita sadly and added, 'although I realise such a view is not very fashionable. No doubt you would not approve, Mrs...'
'BROWNING!' snarled Maria. I grinned. She was at the end of her tether and any minute now she would give up and leave. But then if she left, and I was still here with Ravi, Perdita and Serena, then it didn't bear to imagine what Maria would be saying to Saskia over the phone.
'Ravi will have to stay here to teach while I go back to Colombo,' I said authoritatively.
'But Sir,' stumbled Ravi.
'It's ok, Ravi. You just get the classes started. You need to prepare the children's recital for the grand opening when Lady Chigley arrives, remember?'
Ravi looked at me as George sometimes does when he's about to cry. Perdita must have noticed, for she laid a hand on his arm.
'But Sir, you must stay!' said Ravi.
'It's ok,' I said, 'I'm not really needed here.' It was true. I had performed my role as architect and I couldn't fool myself that I could ever be anyone important in the lives of the children like Meena, who was by my side, still clutching her exercise book in her hand. I didn't even know how old she was. In all the time I had spent at the orphanage, I had got to know very little about the kids.
'Have you got a gold star there?' I asked her.
'Yes,' she replied with a joy whose purity of expression easily outweighed the hate she had shown towards Maria, 'I get nineteen on twenty for spelling.'
'Well done!' exhaled Perdita, 'you can go get yourself a cookie.'
Meena waddled out of the kitchen towards the store cupboard out back and I realised that that was why she had been there all along: to get her reward for good spelling - a cookie - not to save me.
'I'll call a taxi,' I said to Maria, 'it shouldn't take too long to come. We'll be back in Colombo before dark.'
